Recently, the review meeting for the CNGA standard Technical Specification for the Evaluation of Green Factories for Denim Garments, led by the China Fiber Quality Monitoring Center, was successfully held. Industry experts, government representatives, and enterprise delegates gathered to establish a more scientific benchmark for evaluating green factories in the denim garment sector.

This meeting marks an important shift for China’s denim garment industry, moving away from fragmented green production practices toward a more standardized, regulated, and sustainable development stage.

1. Strategic Importance of the Denim Garment Industry

As a representative category within the textile and apparel sector, denim garments carry not only consumer value but also broader significance in industrial upgrading, fiber recycling, and sustainable development. The industry is closely connected with cotton cultivation, fiber processing, spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing across the supply chain.

China remains one of the world’s leading producers, exporters, and consumers of denim garments, with a broad industrial layout and strong employment impact, making it a key support for stable growth in the textile industry.

2. Green Factory Development as a Key Path Forward

Traditional denim production has long faced challenges such as high water consumption, high pollution, and high energy use. These issues, especially in washing and dyeing processes, have become major constraints on sustainable industry development.

Against this backdrop, green factory construction has become a critical solution, while a unified, scientific, and measurable evaluation system is essential for turning that goal into practical implementation.

3. The New Standard Provides a Unified Framework

In recent years, industrial policies have continued to support greener manufacturing. The upcoming Technical Specification for the Evaluation of Green Factories for Denim Garments is designed around actual production characteristics and policy requirements, building a structured indicator system for denim garment washing and related production processes.

The system covers laws and regulations, industrial policy, management systems, energy and environmental standards, and first-level indicators including infrastructure, management, energy and resource input, products, emissions, and performance. It also incorporates certifications and practices related to quality management, environmental management, occupational health, energy management, carbon footprint accounting, and green supply chain development.

4. Standard Implementation Will Accelerate Green Upgrading

As the evaluation system is gradually improved and implemented, it is expected to speed up the concentration of green production capacity in the denim industry, encourage the upgrading of traditional washing factories, and promote a new pattern of green materials, cleaner production, standardized management, and coordinated supply chains.

Driven by both policy and standards, China’s denim garment industry is accelerating toward sustainable fashion and providing a more practical, replicable pathway for green and low-carbon transformation across the textile sector.
